Selection
Summarize or explain any selected text on a web page.
How to Use
- Select (highlight) any text on a web page
- A floating popup appears near the selection
- Choose an action:
- Summarize — Get a condensed version of the selected text
- Explain — Get a detailed explanation of the selected text
- Listen — Read the selected text aloud with AI voice
- Highlight — Save the selection to your Highlights library
Selection Popup
The floating popup appears automatically when you select text. It shows:
- Summarize button — Condenses the selection into key points
- Explain button — Provides a detailed explanation (useful for complex terms or paragraphs)
Disabling the Popup
If you prefer not to see the selection popup:
- Open the extension popup
- Go to Settings
- Toggle off "Show selection popup"
Explain Feature
The Explain action is useful for:
- Technical terms — Get definitions and context
- Complex paragraphs — Break down difficult text
- Foreign phrases — Understand unfamiliar expressions
- Code snippets — Get explanations of code blocks
The explanation appears in the extension popup, where you can also:
- Copy the explanation
- Listen with text-to-speech
- Chat to ask follow-up questions
Tips
- Works on any web page with selectable text
- Short selections (a sentence or two) work best for Explain
- Longer selections (multiple paragraphs) work best for Summarize
- Cached results are reused if you select the same text again

Text to Speech
Listen to any selected text read aloud with natural-sounding AI voices.
How to Use Text to Speech
- Select any text on a web page
- Click Listen in the floating popup
- Audio starts playing in the extension panel
Text to Speech Features
- Natural AI voices: Multiple voices and accents available
- Playback controls: Play, pause, skip forward/back
- Speed control: Adjust playback speed (0.5× – 2×)
- Voice selection: Choose your preferred language and voice in Settings
Tips
- Works on any web page text — great for long articles while multitasking
- Change voices in Settings → Voice
- Short selections start playing almost instantly
Highlight
Save important passages from any web page directly to your Highlights library.
How to Use Highlight
- Select text on any web page
- Click Highlight in the floating popup
- Choose a tag and folder, then click Save highlight
Highlight Features
- Tags: Categorize highlights as Key Finding, Method, Result, Definition, and more
- Folders: Organize highlights into custom folders
- Library access: All highlights viewable in History → Highlights
- Export: Export highlights to Markdown or CSV

- Use tags consistently to make your library searchable
- Highlights are linked back to their source URL
- Combine with Summary and Chat for a full research workflow
Explain
Get instant explanations for any text in your summaries.
How to Use Explain
- Open any summary
- Select the text you want to understand
- Click the Explain button that appears
- Read the AI-generated explanation

Explanations are generated in your interface language. The AI supports all 15 languages available in 5minread: English, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Vietnamese, and Polish.
Tips
- Select specific terms or phrases for focused explanations
- Use for technical jargon, acronyms, or unfamiliar concepts
- Combine with Chat for deeper exploration of topics
