YouTube Button
A quick-access summarize button that appears directly on YouTube video pages.
Overview
When you visit a YouTube video, a lightning bolt button (⚡) appears in the video player area. Click it to instantly start summarizing the video without opening the extension popup.
Button States
| State | Appearance | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Bright, clickable | Video has a transcript, ready to summarize |
| Disabled | Dimmed (40% opacity) | No transcript available |
| Disabled (Live) | Dimmed (40% opacity) | Live stream, no transcript |
Hover Tooltips
The button shows localized tooltips in your selected language:
- Active: "Summarize video"
- No transcript: "No transcript available for this video"
- Live stream: "Live stream — no transcript available"
How It Works
- The extension detects that you're on a YouTube video page
- It checks if a transcript (captions) is available
- If available, the button becomes active
- Click the button to start summarization
- The summary appears in the extension popup
YouTube Shorts
The button also works on YouTube Shorts. It appears in the Shorts player with the same functionality.
Transcript Detection
The button checks for transcript availability using multiple methods:
- YouTube player captions data
- Subtitle button in the player controls
- Captions menu availability
If no transcript is found after several checks, the button shows as disabled.
Some videos have auto-generated captions that may take a moment to load. The extension retries detection several times before marking a video as having no transcript.
Disabling the Button
If you prefer not to see the YouTube button:
- Open the extension popup
- Go to Settings
- Toggle off "Show YouTube summarize button"
